Stay Healthy, Stay Covered – With the Right Insurance Plan

Health is the most valuable thing we have. But medical care in Switzerland can quickly become expensive, whether at your family doctor, in the hospital, or for long-term therapy. The right health insurance plan ensures that you are optimally covered – without unnecessary costs, without bureaucratic hassle, and perfectly tailored to your daily life.

In Switzerland, basic insurance is required by law. It covers the most important medical services. However, depending on your life situation, state of health, or personal needs, supplementary insurance may be worthwhile: for more comfort in the hospital, alternative healing methods, dental treatment, or emergency treatment worldwide. The differences between providers are significant, both in terms of price and benefits.

At wefox, we help you compare policies in order to find the perfect health insurance solution for you. We do this by comparing premiums and benefits from all relevant health insurers in Switzerland – independently, transparently, and free of charge. Whether basic or supplementary insurance, we provide you with personal advice, handle the paperwork, and ensure that you only pay for what you really need. Compare, structure and switch health insurances, all with us - ready to get started?

What is covered?

Basic insurance

  • Mandatory for all residents of Switzerland

  • Basic coverage for all medical needs

  • KVG models: General practitioner model, Telmed, or HMO

Supplementary
insurance

  • Useful for those who value greater convenience, freedom of choice of hospital, or alternative treatment methods – or who travel abroad frequently

Tip: Additional insurance is often worthwhile in the long term – especially for children, athletes and frequent travelers. If you need further help understanding the differences in coverage, we can help you compare health insurance policies to illustrate benefits that may be relevant to you.

Free choice of doctor (Standard Model)

With the Standard Model of basic insurance, you choose your doctor entirely according to your preferences – without restrictions. If you have health problems, you can consult a specialist directly without first consulting a general practitioner. However, this maximum freedom in medical care comes at a price: The Standard Model is generally the most expensive of the basic insurance options.

Family

Family Doctor Model

With this model, you choose a specific family doctor who coordinates your entire medical care. Before you see specialists, you'll usually receive a referral from your family doctor. This approach strengthens continuity of care and often contributes to a reduction in healthcare costs.

HMO-Modell

With the HMO model, if you become ill, you first go to an HMO group practice—a medical center where primary care physicians and specialists work closely together. Treatment is provided within this network, ensuring well-coordinated and efficient care.

Telmed model

With the Telmed model, you first receive a medical consultation over the phone before each doctor's visit. You receive expert assessments around the clock and then decide together with the consultation team whether a doctor's visit is necessary. This approach often saves costs and ensures targeted medical care.

Special Models

In addition to the standard basic insurance models, some health insurance companies offer individually tailored options. Depending on the provider, these special models include special benefits, restrictions, or additional advantages and can be tailored specifically to individual needs and life situations.

How much does health insurance cost?

Health insurance is mandatory for all residents in Switzerland – but premium costs can vary greatly. If you take a closer look at the topic of costs, you'll quickly realize that blanket statements are hardly possible. That’s because the actual premiums depend on various personal and insurance-specific factors.

Cost factors

Insurance model

Whether you choose a standard model, a family doctor model, an HMO, or Telmed – depending on your choice, you can save up to 25% on your premium. The more closely you adhere to a prescribed treatment plan, the more affordable it becomes.

Cost factors

Deductible

The amount of your deductible (between CHF 300 and CHF 2,500) significantly influences your monthly costs. A high deductible lowers your premium but means higher costs in the event of illness.

Cost factors

Insurers

Premiums can vary significantly from insurer to insurer – even with identical models and deductibles. Comparison is always worthwhile.

Cost factors

Location

Premiums vary significantly depending on the canton and region. Costs are often higher in urban areas than in rural areas.

Cost factors

Age

The older you get, the more you pay – especially after age 26. Children and young adults, on the other hand, benefit from lower rates.

Cost factors

Supplementary insurance

Those who add benefits such as alternative medicine, free choice of hospital, or worldwide emergency coverage can expect significantly higher total costs.

Cost factors

Discounts and savings opportunities

Family discounts, prepayment of premiums, or bonus programs can reduce costs – provided you meet the conditions.

The amount of your health insurance premium depends on several factors: your place of residence, age, chosen insurance model, deductible amount, and whether you take out supplementary insurance. By comparing options carefully and tailoring your plan to your personal situation, you can save a lot – without sacrificing important benefits.
